Touchy Subject

Okay. Here it goes. I FINALLY have mustered up enough courage to fully articulate and explain my feelings on a subject that I know is extremely important to many people that I know. BYU. Let me begin by saying that I do NOT in any way, shape, or form hate Mormon people or the Mormon religion. In fact, I think that many of the values regarding family, self-control, etc. are actually pretty great. I won't pretend like there aren't a lot of things that the religion teaches that I don't agree with....but those are completely irrelevant regarding my feelings toward BYU. Now that I've cleared up those common misconceptions...let's begin.

My high school was pretty much 99% Mormon. That's an exaggeration...it was more like 60%. At my high school there were basically two main groups of students, the party people and the Mormons. I didn't fit into either. But since I started dating a Mormon boy, I somehow managed to squeeze through and force myself into the Mormon crowd. Although the group treated me well most of the time, there were definitely times when I felt totally isolated and alone and like I had no REAL friends in that group. Although I got my feelings hurt a lot, I am totally thankful that I hung out with that group rather than the kids that were drinking and getting into trouble at way too young of an age.

So basically, everyone I ever knew or associated with in high school decided to go to BYU or some other school in Utah. I chose ASU. Naturally, I'm going to root against the ONE school that every single person I've ever known or spoken to attends. I don't root against or hate BYU because of the religion that is associated with it. I root against BYU because I want to stand up against all the times that I felt isolated and all the people that go to BYU that gave me a hard time for choosing to go to ASU. That's all it is. Friendly competition. Promise.

Go Sundevils.

Trinkets

I love little, pretty trinkets. I've collected trinkets for as long as I can remember. Some of them are of no value whatsoever, like a cute mint tin or a pretty name tag. And some of them are vintage and handed down to me from my my Great Great Grandmother like a hand mirror or a box or a broach or a pearl necklace. Either way, I love them. I love how pretty they look on my dresser. I love sifting through them every once in a while to clean away the dust or to search for a lost earring. My trinkets are the prettiest trinkets of all the trinkets.

Questions

I recently "stumbled" on (if you have never used the website Stumble Upon, I would HIGHLY recommend it) an article that really caught my attention. This article goes through 62 different questions that you can useto help reconnect with yourself. I love it. I'm slowly making my way through the different questions, letting a few of them resonate in my head throughout the day until I come up with the real answers. Some of my favorites so far are:

What is that thing that no one, not even your partner, your mother or your best friend, knows about you?

What is the way you often sabotage yourself?

What joy could wake you in the middle of the night?

What is the most hurtful thing you’ve ever witnessed? Why did it affect you?

What childhood memory sizzles your heart?

It's strange to know that no one in the world will ever know me like I know me. I like it. It's a comforting feeling to have my own secrets and emotions and experiences and thoughts locked away in my brain and heart. Sometimes we find people that we love and trust enough to let them look through the keyhole into those locked away secrets...but only YOU have the key to your own personal safe inside your mind. Interesting.
