Here's to you 2010

Although 2010 has brought many ups and downs, I'm choosing to focus on the ups. There are so many things that I loved about 2010, but there are a few things that really stuck out in my mind...

I turned 20.

We went to the art museum.

 We drank too much at Gateway.

We went to Arrowhead.

We went traveled back in time.

We hiked.

We celebrated that Mexican holiday.

I sat on this bench.

We slid.

We looked pretty.

We went to Vegas.

I got tatted up.

We drank tequila.

We had visitors.

I had a movie premiere.

We said goodbye.

The Home Team

I just finished the book "Bittersweet" by Shauna Niequist. This writer is brilliant. I latch on to every single one of her words. No sentence goes unloved. However, a few chapters in particular stuck out to me. One of them being "The Home Team."
"Everybody has a home team: It's the people who, near or far, know everything that's wrong with you and love you anyway. The home team people are the ones you can text with five minutes' notice, saying, 'I'm on my way, and I'm bringing tacos.' There are two reasons you need to know who your home team is. First, you need to know who they are because they need you....These are your people, your middle-of-the-night, no-matter-what people. The second reason you need to know who your home team is, is because then you know who your home team is not. Everyone else is everyone else. "
This chapter really got me thinking about who my home team is. I've found that my home team is scattered around the United States. My home team is constantly changing, increasing, and decreasing with each passing day. So this post is for my home team....in Las Vegas, Tempe, Texas, Azusa, Washington D.C., New York, and everywhere else. I love you. You have no idea the joy you bring to my life. I hope that I can always be as great of a player on your team as you have been on mine.

Candy Advocate

Candy makes people happy. That's why I am a firm believer in that everyone should keep bite size versions of their favorite candy in their purse, car, backpack, etc. Warheads are my favorite candy in the whole wide world. They come individually wrapped which makes it extra easy to have a few of them scattered in my purse at all times. So...everyone....keep candy in your purse. :)

Austin

As I begin writing this post, I haven't really planned out what I'm going to say. Lately I've been desperately wanting to write a post about Austin, but I didn't want to become one of "those" girls who gush and gush about their significant other when frankly, no one else really cares. But I am finally giving in and I promise that I won't gush and that my love life will not become a frequent topic on my blog.

I've been a serial monogamist since about the 7th grade, boyfriend after boyfriend after boyfriend. Up until this point I sort of just went through the motions of being a girlfriend. Dates, talking, movies, the whole shebang time and time again. Basically, I just liked to have a boy on my arm at all times in case a Homecoming, Prom, or some other extremely important event came along. And then Austin just decided to wander into my life and change me for the better. He is utterly wonderful. He can make me laugh harder than anyone I have ever met. He is smart, hard-working, handsome...I'm gushing, I'm sorry....he's just great.

On our first date we went to see a double feature of Toy Story and Toy Story 2. It was so fun and unique and so inherently "us." We laughed and teased and played and had the best time (despite the fact that I almost crashed my car and scard the daylights out of him). I went home feeling giddy and girly and ecstatic and the rest is history. I can't believe that night was already over a year ago. So many changes have happened since that night but through it all, we are still so happy. I don't know where our relationship is going to take us. I hope it's far. But if it's not, Austin has shown me what it feels like to be in love and has made me an entirely bright and new Sammie. All that I can hope for is that I have brought him the same happinesses he has brought me.

Girls

It's hard to be a girl...not because of the physical hardships we have to endure such as pregnancy and menstrual cycles and eyebrow waxing, but because of the wide array of emotions that we have the ability to feel and how quickly they can change. I drive myself crazy with thoughts and scenarios and plans and emotions. It's exhausting. Girls feel emotions so deeply. When I'm happy, I'm happy all the way down to my core. But then unfortunately, when my hair doesn't fall exactly how I want it too, I feel like the world is crumbling around me. I can't even imagine what it is like for men to deal with women. I completely understand their frustrations with our gender and their complaints are totally valid.  I'm not sure how my boyfriend keeps up with me. I'm sure he secretly pulls his hair out when I'm not looking. But there are lots of sweets things about girls too. We can wear pink. We look so pretty when we're wearing an outfit that we think we look great in. We have cute little laughs. We can wear high heels and cute girly shoes. We can cook. We are good huggers. We look cute bundled up in the winter time. We are great story tellers. And one day, we can be a mommy. Girls are so great. So here's to all the mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, and girlfriends out there....YOU'RE PERFECT.

Pretzels and Dr. Phil

I've been missing my high school friends a lot lately. Don't get me wrong. I don't miss high school one tiny bit, but I definitely miss the memories. Sometimes I feel like I lack girlfriends in Arizona, but I think that's just because I was so fortunate to have 16 of them at once in Las Vegas. So unless I have 16 girls to hang out with, I'm going to feel like I have no one. Some days I find myself looking through old pictures and laughing at all the inside jokes and memories that were made. It's funny how nights that seemed so insignificant at the time are the ones that end up engraved into your memory the most.The nights where we swore that we were going to find something epic to do but instead just sat in a car and drank slurpees ended up being the ones that will stay with me forever. One of my favorite nights in high school was spent sitting on the couch in my best friend Amy's living room. My friends Alexa, J.Mo, Taylor, and Josephine were there. We ate pretzels and told secrets and laughed so hard that we were gasping for air. We watched Dr. Phil and baby videos of my friend Amy and did impersonations of mean people from our school. At the end of the night we climbed into Amy's parents' gigantic and unbelievably comfortable bed (they were out of town). We laid there laughing and making noises and scaring each other in the dark. It was a night full of immaturity and yelling and junk food and everything in between. Even though I have fallen in love with Arizona and all of the people that have come into my life here...sometimes all I want is a night full of pretzels and Dr. Phil with my friends that have known me for ages.

Thoughts

I don't really have a subject matter in mind for this blog post but I just feel like writing, and that's a good enough reason for me. Please excuse the lack of organization....I'm just going to ramble.

If you've been reading my blog you know that I was just reading a wonderful book called Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist. Well I finished it a few days ago and I just got her second book Bittersweet in the mail yesterday. It's hard cover and sky blue and just looks so beautiful sitting on my nightstand.

I want to go to a wedding. I wish that one of my close friends would get married so that I can go buy a pretty dress and spend a night dancing and drinking in the name of love. I know that's super cheesy but I just think weddings are the greatest thing ever. I refuse to believe in divorce and cheating and anything other than true love. I will always believe that two people can stay in love forever as long as they work at it. I guess I owe that belief to my parents who spend every Saturday and Sunday morning sitting in the backyard eating breakfast together. They are in love and I want to find that one day. But until then...I want someone I know to find it so that I can celebrate with them, and more importantly, twirl around on the dance floor in a pretty dress.

I don't think girls look good with their hair parted in the middle. Yes, some celebrities can pull it off and look decent. However, I have NEVER seen a person that looks better with their hair parted in the middle than to the side. Just my opinion.

Cold Tangerines

I am currently reading a book called Cold Tangerines. It's written by Shauna Niequist and it is the most wonderful book that I have ever had the pleasure of holding in my hands. I wish I could begin to describe to you in words what is so amazing about this book, but nothing I could type would ever do it justice. Cold Tangerines is meant to help people see the extraordinary miracles of everyday life that are so often looked over. One of my strongest beliefs is that everything happens for a reason and even the most seemingly tragic event will somehow be reborn into a miracle. Shauna encompasses this idea better than I could have imagined through her beautiful short stories. This book will change your life.

"I want a life that sizzles and pops and makes me laugh out loud. And I don't want to get to the end, or to tomorrow, even, and realize that my life is a collection of meetings and pop cans and errands and receipts and dirty dishes. Life To-Do List

I've never written a list of things I want to do before I die. I could never think of enough things to put on it. But lately, with everyone studying abroad and doing all these amazing things...I've started to think about what I want to get done while I'm living here on earth. So I decided to make one. My list is not super long, and not everything on it is totally outlandish...but I'm sure I'll add things.

1. Eat a croissant/baguette at an outdoor cafe in Paris
2. Live in Texas for a little bit
3. Go on a crazy Spring Break trip
4. Graduate from ASU
5. See Abraham Lincoln's grave
6. Go on a tour of the White House
7. Buy little baby sized Vans for my son/daughter
8. See the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee
9. See a Broadway show on Broadway in NY

Beautiful Advice

Today is a Special Day

Although today may be just a regular Tuesday for you...it is definitely not a regular Tuesday here in Tempe, Arizona. Today is a day dedicated to two of the most amazing guys I have ever met. Today is Austin and Derek Gardner's 21st birthday. :)

I wish I could find the perfect words to explain how incredibly wonderful my boyfriend and his twin brother are....but nothing I could ever say would do it justice. But I'll try...

Derek Gardner is not only probably the most hilarious person you will ever meet, he is also probably the most loyal. When Derek is absent...the room tends to feel empty and humorless. He is the constant positive attitude and fun-loving energy that keeps his group of friends in tact. But like I said, he isn't just the clown of the group, he is also one of the most loyal. I've seen him rush to the hospital (missing important classes to do so) just to sit in the waiting room to make sure a friend is okay. I've also noticed that he ALWAYS makes an effort to bridge the gaps in geography for friendships and is willing to go above and beyond to stay in touch with old friends. He truly is an unbelieveable person and I literally feel honored to be his friend. If you don't know Derek Gardner...it would definitely be in your best interest  to meet him.

Austin.....where do I even begin with him? I think it is safe to say that he is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Austin has helped me through so much these past 11ish months of our relationship. He's helped me figure out who I am and has really helped me pursue my dreams. But aside from everything he has done for me, he is an amazing person on his own. Austin is, hands down, the most laid-back person I have ever met. His nonchalant attitude is so admirable and I am always thankful that I have him to help me put things in perspective. He is also the most hardworking person I have ever met. I watched him get up at about 6am EVERY SINGLE DAY for a month this summer to help his dad BUILD A HOUSE until about 10pm. He helped without hesitation or bad attitude. He was simply so grateful and happy to help his father. It was truly amazing to watch. He never fails to accomplish any goal or task he sets his mind to. Although you may not know it at first, he is also the sweetest and most caring person you'll ever know. He genuinely cares about every person he meets and he is completely selfless. He is constantly focused on making other people smile and ALWAYS puts the happiness of others before his own. Austin has a zest for life that so many people lack nowadays and is always happy and content with who he is. These, and countless other reasons, are what makes me love him so much.


Happy Birthday Gardners. I am so thankful to have you both in my life.

(500) Days

There is never a day that passes by that I don't think about the movie (500) Days of Summer. It follows me around everywhere I go. I could lie and say that it annoys me...but I absolutely love it and it has made a difference in my dance life. As a "performing arts" student* (see endnote), I am constantly being asked what inspires me and being forced to come up with some elaborate explanation for my artistic work. I have become really good at bullshitting my answers and pretending like I am much more artistic and thoughtful than I really am. Until I saw this movie, I don't think I knew what it meant to be "inspired" by something. I knew what I liked and I knew what made me happy...but I had never felt so in awe of something. So...I recently decided that I am going to begin working on a piece inspired by (500) Days of Summer. Auditions are on Wednesday and I am already getting so anxious and excited to pick out my dancers are get started on what I think is going to be an amazing work. I have so many ideas and so many inspirations that I want to include in the dance, so my biggest hurdle is narrowing all my ideas down so that the dance isn't too overwhelming. But anyway! Since I'm feeling all inspired and (500)ish....I thought I'd share just a few of the inspirations I'm drawing from to help me create my dance!

It amazes me how much thought and detail went into every moment of the movie. I hope that I can put as much thought into every movement in my dance. Listen to this commentary by the (500) director Marc Webb on all the thought that went into just ONE of the great scenes in the movie.

I LOVE this video. It is such a great compliment to the movie. And how handsome does Joseph Gordon-Levitt look sitting in that dimly lit bar in his suit with sunglasses on?!?! Man, oh man. I'm sooo envious of Zooey from 2:07-2:13. She looks absolutely beautiful in this video as well. They're a great match...and such great dancers.



*(endnote: I hate that I love the arts. I also love academics and I am proud to say that I am a smart girl. But because I love the arts...my brain never gets the credit it deserves. Since I am majoring in Dance Education...people brush me off as if I'm some weirdo hippie artist that knows nothing other than dance...which is so not true.)

It's that time again...

The new freshmen are hereeeeeeee! I LOVE when new students move onto campus. Although it was only two years ago that I was moving into the dorms...I feel like I am so much older and wiser now. I just want to hug all the new baby Sundevils and tell them how much fun they are going to have here at ASU. Since I work on-campus, I get a lot of new students coming to me with questions. I always somehow manage to turn their quick question into a long, drawn-out, bragging session about how great ASU is and how they couldn't have possibly chosen a better school. I'm totally obsessed with Arizona State and I want everyone to love it as much as I do. So since I'm feeling all Sundevilish...I'll share this adorable Sparky video with you. :)

Things I've Learned

I've learned so many things about myself and about life since moving to Arizona. It makes me happy to know that I'll never stop learning things about myself and life in general. It's a constant cycle and I love it. The "I've Learned" list is long and never-ending...but here are a few...

Socks are expensive.
I like my alone time...but I don't like living alone.
Hard-boiled eggs are not as easy as they look.
I love babies.
Don't store bleach on a shelf...it might fall off the shelf and spill onto a large pile of clothes.
I am creative. I am not artsy.
I can trim my own bangs.
I like my friends here. A lot.
I like my friends from home that have stuck around. A lot.
Don't drape anything over a lamp.
It's really really fun to date someone that cracks you up.
Don't spill nail polish remover near an open flame.
I like plans and planning.
I love sports. Especially football.
God will make sure everything works out how it should.
Funny people are the best kind of people.
Hydrogen Peroxide works just as well as Crest Whitestrips.
Having a dog makes life so much happier.
Beer is digusting.
I'm not afraid to grow up...but I love this age.
I am not afraid to stand up for myself.
I know I'm going into the right profession.
I talk too much.
Coupons are sooooo great.
Everything will be fine.

"I am Musical"

Back in March I was presented with the wonderful opportunity to be the choreographer for a MOVIE!!! Thanks to lots of rehearsal time and hard work from my dancers, the dances turned out great. The entire cast and crew (inculding myself) filmed the movie in Bullhead City, AZ back in June. The teaser trailer has been released and I LOVE it. It even includes a few tidbits of the dance scenes! I can't wait till the premiere in December. Take a look :)

Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

This speech by Baz Luhrman always has been and probably always will be one of the most inspiring things I have ever read. If you have never heard of this speech, I suggest you take a moment to read it.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the class of '98: Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blind side you at 4 PM on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Margarita and (500) Days of Summer for one please.

"This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know upfront, this is not a love story."


So I've been waiting for the perfect occasion and time to blogging. This blog has been up and running with no posts for a few months now. Now here I am, standing in my kitchen preparing myself a strawberry margarita while I stare across the living room at the movie (500) Days of Summer on our small tv screen. I think this is the perfect time to start.

If you know me at all, you know that I am completely in love with this movie. This is my 19th time watching it since I saw it last September. I love everything about this movie. I love the clothes that Summer wears. I love the dialogue. I love the setting. I love the cinematography. I love how relatable it is. I could go on and on. But most of all, I love everything this movie stands for.

I love how it reminds me that although I sometimes try to control and determine my own fate, things will happen that are far beyond my control. Although I may think something suits me perfectly, it could end up being totally wrong for me. Everyone wants things that they can't have at some point in their lives, but it's always important to remind ourselves that God knows what is best for us. And I trust that he will guide me into the direction I'm meant to go. I really do believe that he has wonderful plans for me. Maybe this movie's close relationship to my beliefs is why it has affected me so greatly...or maybe it's just the adorable bows that Summer wears in her ponytails. Who knows really.
