Sooo since I'm pretty broke and didn't have enough money to go buy all my friends some fabulous Gucci purse or something for Christmas, I decided to make them all cute coasters for their apartments!!! I really like how they turned out. They don't look store bought but they don't look sloppy either. They are the definition of "shabby chic." Here's how I did it....
You will need:
- tiles (14 cents at Home Depot!)
- Scrapbook paper (or photos printed onto regular printer paper)
- Mod Podge glue ($6)
- A brush thingy (the black spongy kind...I'm blanking on their name)
- Acrylic Sealer ($6)
- Felt
- Hot glue gun or any type of glue
First.... I got out all my supplies and laid them out nicely so I could take this picture...
Next...Cover a tile with a layer of Mod Podge glue. Then lay a square of scrapbook paper on top of it. Make sure the paper lays totally flat on top of the glue. Squeeze out any bumps underneath your paper. It'll make your coaster smoother when you're done.
Once your the glue seems to have dried underneath the scrapbook paper...cover the paper with another layer or two of Mod Podge glue. It seals the paper in place and gives it more texture.
Once the top layer of glue has dried, take your coasters outside and cover them with a couple coats of Acrylic Sealer. I bought the Mod Podge brand of sealer but there are tons of other kinds. This sealer makes the coasters smooth, shiny, and waterproof.
Once the sealer has dried. Glue squares of felt that are slightly smaller than the tile itself to the underside of it. I used some Mod Podge glue at first...but I found that a hot glue gun worked MUCH better.
Yayyyyy! Now you're done. Like I said before...you can use scrapbook paper for the top of your coasters like I did above...or you can print out pictures from your computer and make photo coasters like the ones I made for my friend Alex below...
